Description
Voyage on board tall ship STS Leeuwin II as a training member of the crew to learn all aspects of how to sail Leeuwin on the high seas, by night and by day.
You will be assigned into 1 of 4 Watches – each Watch has 10 people working together to sail the ship for the duration of the voyage.
Tasks will include:
- Hauling on the heaving lines with 10 or 20 other people to help raise the sails and change their direction. There are 16 different sails on board
- Climbing the rigging and masts in full climbing harness to furl and unfurl the sails, imagine doing these tasks at height, and then picture doing this while the ship is moving and even the spar you may be standing on will be therefore moving as well.
- Taking your rostered turn on Nightwatch as we sail through the night. This will include doing engineering checks and taking navigation readings.
Learning all aspects of how the ship is run, including taking your turn at the helm, on the big steering wheel. - Taking your rostered turn assisting with Catering in the full working galley. Trainees rostered onto galley duty assist our professional Cook and volunteer Cook’s Mate.
- We have no “Passengers” as such on board, everyone is an active part of the Crew.
- In your Watch, cleaning a different part of the Ship each day during “”Happy Hour””
- Work together with the other members of your Watch to complete assigned tasks, but also to have fun, make new friends, and contribute to skits/singing/performing. There is a guitar on board. If you know how to play the guitar your services will be in demand.
